Destiny

byWelshdreamer42©

I can't help loving you.
I just do.

I've no entitlement
To your affection,
Yet I seek it regardless,
And I'm blessed
That you reciprocate.
Our love is true.

But our timing's all wrong,
Way off the mark.
I failed to find you
When I searched for love.
Desperate, needy,
I settled for a man
Who wasn't my soul mate,
Who wasn't 'the one'.

Meeting you now
Seems cruel,
A bitter-sweet find.

Perhaps I should have backed away
The moment I was drawn to you,
The instant I acknowledged
We were more than friends?
I could have saved us both
From this aching confusion.

No. I was powerless. Bound.
We gravitated towards each other,
Our inevitable collision,
Predictable as the turning seasons
Or blanketing night
That smothers each day
With routine indifference.

Destiny. Fate.
Call it what you will.
We're supposed to be together,
Meant to hold one another,
Share each other's lives.
And I have never been happier.
