pale was the face
fast was the race
thru midwestern highways
and streets on fire
how did I acquire
her number, I'm not sure
I could tell she was poor
but very fine
not exactly my kind
too pretty for me
let's wait and see
I was the sophisticated suitor
she the Midwest bible belted naif
for minutes I struggled to unhook her bra
to feel those pert breasts of a pioneer
in a bra that befuddled me
in the dark I could not see
it unhooked from the front
I had to punt
to unbuckle that belt
to open her thighs and
it all seems so near
ever after fifty year
even if you gave me fame
I can't at this moment
remember her name
I am sure it will come to me
in a cold midnight rush of memory
as so much that plagues me
does so arrive
strangely I recall your father so alive
a thin country gentlemen now long gone
as poor as a church mouse but with spirit
one who lifted dirt in the auto industry banal
as I slept in your room of stuffed animals
and you slept on the couch downstairs
I sensed you father welcomed me
a stranger in his house
A replacement for what?
I was soon to find out
That you were saving yourself
for a boyfriend
a soldier far away
you would not stray
yet your breasts you gave away
to me on that sacred day
and by week four
you gave even more
as I filled the soldier's grave
I did not behave
You smiled as my sperm filled your cleft
"There is nothing left to give you"
you said as I kissed your cheek
and promised that next week
we'd do more than speak
this was no idle seduction
if the fates had not conspired
to wrest your wedding gown attire
you would be here today, tonight
holding my head in your arms
your sweet breast against my face
as I lie here dying
perhaps I sinned, by going in
but every man must pay
when he leaves a lover to go far away

This is a good poem. Powerful and fun to read. Five stars -- JB Edwards
