Life is inaugurated with a clamour;
indignant, rightly so, the child will cry -
it will not leave the womb without a tremor
and only gives in fighting, by and by.

Youth only knows the silence of the shy -
the rest proclaims their presence right out loud
and modesty to most's too hard a try
when you're still young, and wonderful, and proud...

But gradually you're quietened by doubt
as to the truths of life, and why we're there,
when what you think that life is all about
is a fair chance no more but a steel snare

and irrevocably you will fall still
and you will cry no more, nor even sigh
each time you meet, like everybody will,
the cold and bitter silence of goodbye.
