I wake at 5
and all my guests
have dirty faces.
when the poor
all get together
and nest
the dirty walls
once white
can never again
be washed clean.
only paint
or a sudden shock
a massive change
of mind.

Our apartment has mice
small
brown
mice.
there are three
or four
fast
and smarter
than one might think.
we caught one
and they took it as
a message
war
they thought.
the next day
they struck.
first the cereal
then the bread.

I washed my face this morning
and how good it feels
to be out
of that nest
of sad
lowly
forbidden faces.
