Dreams of Sappho

Black feathers fall gently around my head
Lightly brushing my cheeks like a lover’s kiss;
I reach out for you in the darkness
Longing to caress your face,
To feel your lips once more on mine.

A white dove takes flight from my hand
Her gossamer wings beating cadence with my heart.
You have returned to me in dreams
Only to tempt me with your beauty
That I can no longer have.

What have I done to push you away?
Did I love you too much? Too little?
Did I not please you with my mouth
My hands, my womanhood?
Did you not enjoy our passion?

Remember, my beautiful Sappho,
When we touched and kissed
Each other’s breasts?…
Our fullness pressing against each other
As we lay face to face in our embrace?

Remember the ecstasy we felt
In each other’s arms, my beloved?
The long nights of blissful love
When we melded our bodies and souls
And knew we would never be apart?

In my dreams, your are with me again,
I hold you in my arms, touch your ivory cheeks,
Gaze into your liquid eyes,
Wipe away your tear of joy…
And you vow to love me forever.

In my dream I am transported to another place
Where I can see you, feel you, taste you again.
I long for you my Goddess
I want to feel my mouth against your breasts
Your stomach, the nectar between your legs.

I am afraid in my dream now.
The black feathers have returned
And your face has gone.
The winedark water is calling to me.
I look for you in the lake outside our bedroom.

Sappho, dear Sappho….if only you would return.
