Echoes in an empty room
tell me I am alone.
A single set of foot steps
sounds through out the hall.
Meals prepared for only one
so bland and without taste.
Long hours spent in solitude
make hours seem like years.
Darkness falls as daylight dies
making the night seem ever endless.
Lying awake to watch another day begin
only to start the whole cycle again.
If I but had the courage to walk out that door
what joy and happiness would I find?
Is the love I craved and never found
just a dream I have at night?
I stare in contemplation at the door
that separates me from the world.
It's only made of wood,
closed with a simple lock.
I put out my hand to turn the knob
thinking today will be the day.
But then I turn and walk away
not willing to chance the pain.
