EN CONTREPOINT FLEURI
(sonnet)

I had in mind to tell you how I feel,
I waited for your anger to recede,
facing defeat I thought, "I lack the will",
I was retreating, you were in the lead.

Not always like tonight, yet here we are,
in florid counterpoint to Long Ago,
enduring love and hate reaching a par,
as free they come and free we let them go.

Atoning comes too late for such mistakes,
to say "I'm sorry", penitence to seek,
it takes strong guts, we don't have what it takes,
to hell with us, to hell with our whole week.

Sorry, my love, I could not stand that hell,
and still pretend that all with us was well.

A bit puzzled

For some reason, the cadence of the poem works against its subject for me. Harking to my own hand- and soul-wringing arguments, I would have expected more "exhausted passion." Instead its cadence acts to distance me from its subject, makes it sound almost playful. Like the narrator no longer gives a shit. But that flies in the face of the last two lines. So... I'm not sure where I stand.
