Our forefathers settled this land,
they gave us our country.
Our forefathers fought for this land,
they had a vision for the future.
They gave us the Declaration of Independence.
From the kings English of their homeland
evolved a language unique to this country.
Like every other country
we have a native language.
Our native language is American English...
Not Spanish
or Russian
or Chinese, Japanese
or any other -ESE.
It is not ebonics
or ghetto
or slang.
It is American English.

It was American English
What would they say if they knew
in this country they founded
with their blood
we have let our native tongue
be stripped from us?
That speaking American
English in America
is no longer a given-
it is an option we must choose,
many times,
not even the first option.

Is it really asking so much?
If you pass our borders
to live a life in freedom
Is it really too much-
to ask that you speak English?
In the country
with the open arms,
the one you call your own-
Is it wrong to think
that a citizen of America
should know how to speak
American English?

Why is it
that a language spoken
throughout the world
cannot be spoken
by its own people?

We give a gift
of citizenship.
To be a citizen-
to be an American-
Is to speak
American English

If you take a gift
you don't take
only what you want.
you accept the
whole gift.
Take the gift
but in its whole,
or don't take it
at all.

HORRAY!!!

I give you credit for this, many people feel the same way but it took guts to put it out here. I find it funny those negative comments are from someone who wouldn't even put their name, someone who is so patriotic they do not think it is necessary to capitalize the 'A' in America and someone who does not even live in America!!I do agree it is not poetic but the content more than makes up for it

Your ignorance is showing...

There were people here way before YOUR forefathers.

ummm excuse me....

is this a soap box your standing on? do not forget that this country is made up of different cultures without immigrants we would have no country...and I beg to differ, there were other native tounges that occupied this land before "american english" oppressed them into silence. I find your tone ignorant, without human beings evolving constantly we would not grow and without growth we become stagnant.

an average 3

While there is logic and strong argument behind your statements. You do not express them in poetic form.

For your diatribe a 5, for their form of expression on a poetry site a 1. On average an average 3.
