I begin to see my caring fade
as those things that once mattered
now seem to matter less
and less
through the pain I feel.

Senseless pain, I heap on myself
without trying,
it comes unbidden in response to
what I see and read,
the world around me.
Perhaps I simply cared too much.

Now, oh, now...
Now I cannot sleep for the pain.
I stay awake, dreading it
and it's gnawing as I lay waiting
for sleep to take me.
No, I would rather sleep
some other time.

The more I see,
the clearer the world around me becomes,
the more I hurt.
Cut, and again, and again,
I suffer, I bleed,
until soon the world
is lost to my focus,
and I know less and less
but thoughts of ending this pain
once and for all.
