My family
Is not only who I was born from
But whom I Choose to be in
Those I Choose to be with

Sometimes family
Are those I distrust the most
Because it is they
Who know me best
Or seem to know me least

My family
Can be the ones I want to be closest to
Or those I need to be farthest from
For my safety and theirs

Family can be
Those who refuse to see me change
Or believe that I cannot
Those who see me for who I am
And what I have the potential to be

The ones who make me laugh loudest
Or cry longest

The ones who will push me forward
Or hold me back

The ones who will praise my caution
Or call me a coward

Why do the ones
Who should love me the most
Be the ones who are the most cruel?
