The leveller came knocking on her door.
She made him welcome, offered him some tea,
Inquired why he hadn't come before
And indicated timidly that she
Would gladly come – couldn't remember how
She'd entertained a man, or felt the ruse
Of dancing, talking – with a formal bow
Her partner bade her say what tune they'd choose
And linking arms they danced into the night –
No man before had seen her face so bright.
