They'd walked the downs that day, and now
  they sat and pondered how
their day had been, their trills, their smiles, their frowns -

the fire burnt low but still so bright
the clouded sky -  though light
behind the singsong pine trees - didn't show.

Content to sit after their walk
  they didn't want to talk
and none would like to be the first to quit.

When all the red had turned to grey
  and birds announced the day
they said goodnight, went silently to bed

and quickly crept into their tents.
  Pale daylight filled the rents
but they were deadly tired and they slept

until they woke to shout and run
and have a lot of fun
and treat that solemn night as just a joke.

don't know what you are doing here?

easy rhyme to simulate children?

and killed by the word "solemn" may have been one of your words, but doesn't fit the tone

think it though

When all the red had turned to grey

as ash would say

Reminds me of Faeries playing.

They have lots of fun, and can be very clever. :)

What Tazz said!

The spirit of a child, wanting to savor every moment, and never let go of the joy, and the soul of a grown-up, able to savor the depth and completeness of that joy!
