For Carol, who will never read it

byinvictus17©

I've moved on; I've left you behind. So long

It's been - seven years
                               (yesterday)
                                                     It seems

It was another life. And it was wrong.

It had to end. I know that.
                                        But the dreams

Still come.
Trying to find you, to reach you,

The brief joy of your smile, and then you're lost

To me again. And nothing I can do

Will bring you back...
                               You cannot know the cost

Of this poor peace I hammer out, alone -

Thoughts I dare not think, songs I dare not hear -

To hold back the cold and dark.
                                         You are gone.

Enough.
I will be fine, by noon.
                                                  No tear

Escapes my eye.
                           I am content.
                                                 It's true.

I swear it is.
                   I don't.
                             I don't miss you....
