FORTUNE’S MYSTERY

From time to time we meet a kindred soul,
an unexpected stranger on the way.
Who takes our parts and seems to make them whole,
and understands the words we say.

It might be on some city avenue,
or at a place you stopped to stretch awhile.
It might be on the screen in front of you,
or just beyond that nod and knowing smile.

If fortune should allow your paths to cross
and share however long the time maybe.
Let not the days before count up as loss,
nor those that follow after be less free.

For every life is written by a hand
that we cannot outwit or second guess.
And what appears to be our own command
Is truly just a fool in tyrants dress?

So let the flowers of spring grow as they may,
and cherish what their fleeting bloom intends.
And when that kindred spirit comes your way:
Enjoy what fortunes mystery extends.
