Old Man of the Mountains

This poem is about the iconic Old Man of the Mountains in Franconia Notch in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. This natural rock formation resembled the head of a bearded man and was featured on New Hampshire quarter. Sadly, that formation collapsed a few years ago.

The Old Man of the Mountains was the subject of the short story "The Great Stone Face" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. In that story a young man who was transfixed by this rock formation grew into an old man whose face and head became a spitting image of this rock formation,
