Gift of Me

You make me smile through the tears
and then, when there is nothing left
but streaks of salt dried on cheeks,
I find that I am laughing with you.

To my family once removed, spread
far and wide across this crazy world -
I adore you for caring, bothering
to remind me that I am not an island.

They who believe that family must
mean blood, that love must become
anguish when broken - that crowd
has no idea what they are missing.

He who stopped loving, without
notice or compassion - while pain
still rends my heart, he no longer
holds purchase on this soul of mine.

I refuse to be turned against myself,
to second guess or believe the selfish
bitch that he invented lives inside this
body or spirit that belong only to me.

I shall take this gift of me and share
it at my whim - loving where and whom
I please now that the tethers are severed
that have so long held me captive.
