What can you say
When the only thing left is goodbye?
When it isn’t enough to make love
Tenderly, passionately
As if for the very first time.
When it isn’t enough for two minds
To know without words
Feelings hidden deep in the heart.
When it isn’t enough to laugh
Or touch lightly just to reassure,
Or talk for hours about nothing.
When it isn’t enough to hold hands
And walk together, carefree.
When the path makes a fork
And enters the dark forest of obligation,
It’s then that you know
You must travel the rest of the way alone,
Accompanied only by sweet memories.
And the only thing left is goodbye.
