headlights
splashing over our bared silhouettes
as we wrestle playfully on the
dew-laced carpet of grass
him
with a half-hearted attempt to pin me
knowing his intents the same as mine
me perched
territorially
over his prone form
as a vulture
that sullen look upon their contemplative features
guards its kill
the backwash of the passing cars
crwaling their way through the night
lifting my hair
catching my cries
and tearing them from my wind-chapped lips
an entwined, automotive rhythm
as passionately steady and unfaltering
as the metronome of the windshield wipers
gasoline running low as we
rise and fall only to rise and fall again
as the sun dawns and dusks over the land
the analog numbers of a speedometer shifting
so many miles traversed
as we arrive at our
long awaited destination

and we settle back in the glow of each other
the glow of red taillights
