Hoping to Survive

The cool evenings vanquish summer
I close the windows in the evening
Cover the canaries with an old sheet
The little dog crawls under the covers
Silent except for an occasional snore
My wife watches television as I fall asleep
I awake in the early morning
The back yard is dark
The light has gone out again
I must remember to check it
The front light bulbs need replacement
I'm to busy living to keep the place up
My wife is redecorating
Moving vases and urns as if this will change anything
I kiss her cheek and let her sleep
I walk nude to the kitchen
Feed the cats, one is still sleeping
Wash last night's dishes and glasses
Clean the stained porcelain sink
Outside the soft morning light turns on my world
I glance out the window
Hoping to survive before the assassin arrives
