the one who speaks
in a crowded elevator
and makes you laugh
while we're traveling the floors
I am
the one in line
who makes conversation
to pass the time
while we're waiting our turn
I am
the father of a little girl
who plays with pokemen
and pretends with teletubies
protecting her from the ills of this world
I am
the husband who desires
his wife to stay at home
and care for the child
while I slay the wilderbeast for supper
I am
the son grown so tall
who comes back home
to shovel the driveway, mow the lawn
while to old folks stare out the window
wondering how time travels so far yet near
I am
the man behind you in line
whom you glance at and remember
while your making love to your husband
thinking and feeling my hands, my body
on yours
I am
the long hair hippy you've classified
dismissing me as common, weird and odd
a peace monger, a home wrecker
bait for the law
I am
the man you desire,
in your corner, behind you
supporting you through it all
while you face the world knowing
I'm here to catch you if you fall
I am
your next door neighbor
always quite, always helpful
always there should you need a hand
I'm there
I am
a womans brother
whom she's relyed on for comfort
to see her through a rocky marriage
with nothin to offer but love and support
I'm he
I am
the man in the bar
who buys you a drink
and compliments your body
who gets to know you for just you
with interest
I am.....
I was taught to show and not tell when it comes to poetry. You show us exactly what you're talking about with many great examples.
By filling out the repeating line with well developed thoughts you make it work.
This poem is not dark nor full of expletives.
I think it one of your best.
while to old folks" - the "to" should be "two"
"I am
a womans brother
whom she's relyed on for comfort
to see her through a rocky marriage
with nothin to offer but love and support
I'm he"
"womans" is possessive
"relyed" has no "y"
and I believe "whom" doesn't want the "m" ??
