My lip is split and swollen from
being punched in the mouth
the night before. Her brown eyes
turn up the volume in my head
drowning out the memory.
Gum takes away the taste of
blood, but not the ache.
The dull sting won’t let me
forget it is there.

“I love you,” she says.
Her arms wrap around my neck.
I am pinned silent by her kiss.
Her mouth hot and hard on mine.
She reopens the wound for her to explore.
Her tongue probes the jagged split.
I groan and stiffen, but
she mistakes pain as some kind of passion,
maybe even pleasure.

She kisses harder.
My eyes water for release, but
I cannot pull away.

It’s funny how much a little thing
like that can hurt.
