I waited on the cold sheets for nearly an hour
Trying hard to resist the urge to cover my naked flesh
I was told not to move or open my eyes
But how long was I to remain alone?

Sometimes I would imagine that I heard footsteps
At the side of the bed
Sometimes I was certain I could feel the air move
But I was never completely sure

I wanted to call out
Inquire if I was alone
But I was warned
Not to speak

My bladder was full
I wanted to run off to the bathroom
I was not bound or blindfolded
I had only been given instructions
And I found them impossible to disobey

I had been there for nearly an hour
I was sure
Maybe more
The phone had been ringing without end
Suddenly I heard something knock it off the hook
I jumped but I didn’t move from the bed
I did not open my eyes

And then the most gentle touch
From icy fingers
Running along my spine
