as I contemplate this reflection
set before me
I recognize the features
features that have been my reminders
of parents long gone
not dead to the world
but dead to me
how is it that
one can be conceived
in such hate
a couple
maybe once in affection
turned soon to affliction
their need to hurt
was too powerful
these things I can see
these things I couldn't change
I pledge to myself
these features in front of me
are me

as I watch the expression
on the mirror change
from contempt
to understanding
I am struck by a
feeling almost
foreign to me
Oneness
these features
are not a mother
who didn't care
a father who
didn't notice
but of a woman
with the power
of her own identity
My Own.
