I try to imagine
What John Lennon would say
If only he were alive today
He would laugh hard and long
At Sir Paul and Sir Nick
And Sir Elton John

Silver tongues silenced
By acknowledgment from the crown

The heart of rock and roll’s been broken

What once was art
And freedom
And rebellion
From a dog-dirty society
Has become part and parcel
Of the money-sucking scum
At whom
John would have thumbed his nose
And raised a mid-finger
While writing blistering songs
About soldiers boiling in oil
In the desert sun
Supping on yellow cake

Now yellow tanks replace yellow subs
In military argot
Civilians are cannon fodder
Officers take pot shots
At yellow journalists
They’re playing mind games
Down Guantanimo Bay
Where human rights have lost their way
In the end there will be hell to pay
But the US won’t have
Any money for sure
They spent it all
On the bloody war

If only we could give peace a chance
That’s what Johnny boy would say
