Chilly air, tinged with excitement
And the warmth of hands interlaced;
Smiles.
A day stretched before us,
Unfilled like a blank canvas…

We roam about,
Darting between raindrops;
Breakfast here,
Mail to take in there,
A walk between tall shelves of books;
Spiny rainbows of recipes and prose,
Rain beating the smoked skylights
Like heavy-fisted maracas.

At home we take our time;
Talking, reading
Remembering our lives.
And when the last light
Has washed from the sky,
We close our shutters to the night,
Fill our glasses with earthy wine.
We listen to Sinatra croon
From between the grooves
Of a record as old as you and I,
Combined.
Laughter spills over rich chocolate,
Sails us along to bed
Where we kiss and make love;
Whispering poet and one-time cowboy
Until our pleasure runs over
And we shudder,
Ready to take on dreams
And surrender this day,
This stolen memento day,
Relinquishing to the hands of time.
