In the beginning
(we’ve been told)
was the Word
and the Word
was the Lord God

The Word is the connection
and the root
and the link
between you and me
-      between the past and the future
the soul of being human

No Word is profane enough
to be muted
No Word is sacred enough
to be kept locked in the heart
No Word is dangerous enough
            to be censored

The Word
(I’m telling you)
is the link
and the root
and the connection
            strangle it not
