If I were to speak the truth
I’d tell of the snobbish way
you shook your head
at the thought of sharing a room.

You weren’t like those other people
-you deserved more.

If truth be told I’d confess
how you lashed out quick
from under white sheets
when I tried to offer hope.

You were dirty under there.

But I won’t speak the truth
and you’ll be memorialized instead
along with our plastered on smiles
and tear soaked cheeks.

We’ll remember you as a gallant fighter
who went out of her way to help others.
We’ll remember only the beginning,
and I suppose that’s a good place to end.
