I pour over his letters
and think back to the pier
where warmth wrapped fingers
beneath the call of gulls
the waves rushed the rocks
and graced our misted faces
as he turned and kissed my forehead
moistened in sea haze
We were wrapped in the moment
and all I should have told him
was bubbling at the tip
tasting of salty spray
to sting before forgiveness
washed us in redemption
but the moment quickly passed
as the gulls left the bay
I heard him whisper gently
“we have to give this up”
blasting my baptism
tongue-tied, I turned away
