The heart squeezes
All breathing fails
Defeat is circling above
A vulture ready for the roadkill
Of our love

Within a single moment of time
The crush of reality and truth
Moments ago, all was perfect—
Intimacy, love, devotion
Now?

"Fight for our lives and our dreams!"
The mind screams at me
Looking in terror at the sky

Fight for the hope he taught
me to feel as he promised
The words that ties

"I love you forever"
Whispered in my ear
Tainted by her perfume?
The touch of her skin, perhaps?

Fight for what you want!
A lifetime of love or a lifetime of sorrow
Are they one in the same?

A shadow falls across my face
Cast by the predator's wings
But for now I stagger to my feet, wounded
Willing to fight for our lives, our future
For another day
