This far from youth, snuffed, smoking jealousy
is not the sudden snake’s sharp sting. It does
not render me incapable, nor will
it stop my reason short: it rather is
suspended speech’s lingering pain that seeps
through too slow bones, and pains my finger joints,
still deadly, sly as peat-fire, when it sleeps.
