A cold road we've come down on, and a far
While chasing an alluring, distant flame
To find that we've pursued a dying star.

We left, and didn't leave the door ajar
Because we thought we'd surely reach our aim –
A cold road we've come down on, and a far.

It's long ago that we met at the bar
And tossed the dice – we both have lost the game
While trying to pursue a dying star.

And now and then this thought our days will mar:
What if we only have ourselves to blame?
A cold road we've come down on, and a far,

And on our hearts we've got the selfsame scar
As all those other wanderers who came
To find that they'd pursued a dying star –

Unhappy and uncertain though we are,
We have to keep on going, all the same:
A cold road we've come down on, and a far
And yet we will pursue a dying star.

Beautiful villanelle

You may want to rethink some of the repeated lines as the power of this form often comes from the magnetic, drawing in through the repetition - see Dylan Thomas - do not go gentle for the classic example of the power of the form.
