Local diner on the Alternate Road
parked my truck, my heavy load
ordered coffee and apple pie
a hot, dusty Kansas sky,
Place was empty, waitress said "hey ...
.. hot enough for you today?"
I smiled and got change for a ten
ambled to the pay telephone, again,

Dropped in a quarter, one of those things
heard a dozen empty rings
not expecting a different reaction
a prime number from a fraction,
She filled my coffee cup, again
the same smile, as when I came in
name on her waitress dress said "Liz"
I wondered Mrs., Miss, or Ms.,

Answered my question in a round-about way
I hesitated, then said ok
the apple pie tasted great
with a scope of ice cream, and fate,
Later she asked if I had to go
thought of a dozen ways to say no
that Alternate Road, that Kansas sky
now think of both with a lonesome sigh ...
