“Ramadan Kareem,” says Ariel,
And I glare at her,
My beloved girlfriend,
The princess of Tel Aviv.

“That’s what you get for waking me up early,”
I scream at Ariel,
Tossing a pillow at her face,
Ariel laughs,
And that muscular tomboyish body
Easily wrestles me down.

I wrap my legs around her,
Ariel kisses me,
I grab her butt,
My fingers enter her vagina,
And Ariel moans.

We make love passionately,
What a way to start the day,
For a Muslim woman who loves women,
And her beloved Jewish girlfriend.

It’s the wee hours of the morning,
Fajr prayer time is coming,
I bathe, dress up and get ready to pray,
Meanwhile Ariel watches me.

I, Karissa, am a rebel,
You know this by now,
Dearest reader,
It’s what I am.

Nevertheless I must pray,
Five times a day,
A Muslim woman who loves women,
Is still a Muslim.
To hell with those who disagree.

“Let me pray with you,” Ariel says,
And I am stunned into silence.
I would never pressure her,
To accept my fate.

Ariel smiles, and prays beside me.
My heart soars,
As I pray beside my beloved.
When prayer concludes,

I have tears in my eyes,
As Ariel and I embrace,
Muslim woman and Jewish woman,
Two women of faith,
Who love each other.

Ariel fasts with me during Ramadan,
Ariel shops for tampons with me,
Ariel showers with me,
Ariel sleeps beside me,
Ariel prays beside me,
Ariel makes love to me.

Tell me again,
Why we are wrong,
To love one another,
Isn’t that what life,
Is simply all about ?
