Years ago as a child
When I was all alone
Shoved out into the world
Didn't have a home

I was shunned
Everyone looked down on me
Not a soul would share a smile
They all looked but didn't see

I was sitting alone once again
The other kids were being mean
I had tears in my eyes
Until I met Kathleen

She was my very first friend
She saw past what was on the outside
She sat down beside me
She crossed the great divide

This privileged girl
With the long dark locks
Took my hand and smiled
And we began to talk

At eight years old
I'd never met someone so kind
She gave me hope
Goodness could be found in mankind

Though our friendship was cut short
As off to another home I trekked
I've held her friendship in my heart
She had quite the effect

Years have passed
And I think of her still
She held my heart back then
She always will

She was a friend when I needed one
In a desert she was my mirage holding the canteen
She brought me back to life
You are my immortal friend my dear Kathleen

*to one of the many people in my life who touched me in ways that changed me, in ways that made me who I am today. Thank you, wherever you are, for showing me the first sign of happiness in my my life K.

What a lovely tribute. How lucky you were to have a true friend.
