This poem is the sequel to The Torture of the Electrons.

****************

Two disembodied spirits met somewhere
While wandering through lyric clouds of verse,
And there they sang, for better or for worse,
A melody in unison. A pair
Of solitary souls, they could traverse
Poetic realms together -- but to dare

To take the conversation down below,
Where flesh greets flesh in corporeal dance?
Surrender to a tangible romance --
Invisibly, or risk a world of woe?
For they were prisoners of circumstance,
And no one in the real domain could know.

They did alight upon a speck of land
And it was unimaginably sweet,
A vital blaze of cataclysmic heat
That so eclipsed the simple tryst they'd planned.
Much more than just a momentary treat,
They journeyed through an Eden hand in hand.

A sheltered space, sequestered from the din
Of chattering responsibilities,
A bottle of good scotch, some feta cheese,
With herring, bagels, cherries and some sin
To nourish them. How urgent now to seize
These moments, how impossible to win!

They felt the tremors rumble up with speed
To shake the very bedrock of their days,
The sturdy masonry of worldly ways,
It all began to tremble with their need.
The carnal spark that set them both ablaze
Demands expression, both in word and deed.

These lovers hope (for that they are, and true)
The breath of art will let their love grow wise,
To kiss the fatal earth goodbye and rise
By seeking scraps of verse to lead them through
The air, a trail of crumbs to guide their eyes
And find the pathway back into the blue,
To bid the pull of gravity adieu
And keep their loving safe among the skies.
