"Let's go out for a drink, the need's all too clear."
Nobody seems eager, nobody's got the time.
I'm not the least pissed, it's just my spot of humor,
I worked from home today, there's nobody here.

I take a six-pack out to the porch,
The spring peepers make a din
Just as loud as any bar,
The screens keep the mosquitoes out,
They can't pay the cover charge.
The moon sits on the neighbor's roof,
Her look's full of promise.
I raise her a toast, I offer a beer,
Nobody drinks it but the moon doesn't care.

There's partying at the American Legion,
Just down the street,
"Stairway to Heaven" lights up the air.
I start to dance and nobody laughs,
I start to sing and sure nobody joins in.
"Set out a mixing-bowl, fill it with water,
I'm so in the mood for slow dancing with you."
If only you'd driven up just that minute,
Stopped your car in the drive
And seen the moon, nobody, and I
Drinking, dancing, glad to be alive...

Nobody leaves early,
The moon spends the night.
"Do you miss the stars?
The city lights are so bright."
"From the I-MilkyWay, down which I steer,
The sky's black and always so clear,
The stars're many and such a delight."

I wake slumped on the table,
The sun's look: stern and judgmental.

Li Bai at the American Legion, "Stairway to Heaven"; Gol Dang I love it, you have an excellent sensibility for observation.

All the poignancy of being alone and festive; no one's there to share in the spirit and raise it to the next level.

Being too ignorant

and too lazy to seriously study the fineries of poetic expression, all I can say is I love the stuff I read of yours. This one is fucking sweet. The moon sitting on the roof... the stern sun next morning. It's like not playing the guitar for a long time, then watching a great guitarist play, which excites me to want to play, though they sit on a place so far above. Oops. Great piece here. Thanks for sharing it.
