how do I let go
when thoughts are entangled
like vines in my mind
new growth is soon suffocated
wrapped by trunks long established
now thick with bark,
attitudes reside in the crevices
wait to challenge change
in direction of perception

how do I defoliate
allow birth to flourish
find nourishment and flower
when the roots of old habits
delve so deep,creep
beyond the recesses of gray matter
and find refuge
in the chamber of my heart

how do I begin
the process of purging
when withdrawal stands more threatening
than the poison already acquanted with
as the voices of the past
echo assurances in familiar tones
that are reminscent of a funeral dirge
soothing yet final
