His all-time wish had been to sail away
and seek that island in the farthest seas
where you can lose yourself among the trees
and find fulfillment as the old tales say,

until at long, long last he felled a tree
and halved and hollowed it, and made a boat;
he dragged her to the beach, set her afloat
and never looking back took her to sea

where, ocean-going, strong, she made her run
across the silent waters till the roar
of spray and surf told him he'd reached his shore:
that half-forgotten island of the sun.

Once on the beach he shed his shabby clothes,
worn hopes and ideals and all false pretense
and walked on inland, drawn by the immense
bright sun - and there lay down, and no more rose.
