when they told me what love is
they lied.

love is not
a soft glow.
it is not candlelight
or velvet
or rose petals.

love is
a dull ache behind my eyelids.
it is an ulcer
a cancer

it rots flesh.

love is
three razor cuts
on my shoulder.

and when all the skin and muscle have been stripped from my bones
and all the blood drained from my body
and oozing organs leave trails along the sidewalks behind me

then you will see
what love is:

love is truth.
it will purify

sanctify.

even this
this hardest of hearts
this unworthiest of unworthies
this girl.
