Light and Night

What a strange thing is light
But which illuminates and makes bright
The seeping darkness of the night

Light warms where cold air rasps
And light destroys fear that grasps
But night gives light’s last gasps

Do monuments that glitter in day
Ever tempt the light to stay
And keep the darkness at bay

Do homes where the lanterns dwell
Cleave the miasma that does swell
When the people forever are farewell

Do souls with all their fire
Defend forever against the lurking mire
Ever onward and never without tire

The only solace here is this
After darkest night comes morning’s kiss
And shadows will flee without miss
When light’s arms give us bliss
