maybe we should have just stayed lovers
and never have become involved

could be that we should have kept our feelings
hanging like old clothes in our secret closets

perhaps had we not taken the time
to get to know each other so well

then we wouldnt have confided
in each other so much

and then we wouldnt have needed
each other so often...

we opened ourselves reluctantly
like stubborn clams.
