A glance askance
Taken in for granted
Eyes upward rolling in reaction
To ward away my tired words
You get the picture all too quick
I am good for your hand but not your heart
What with all my all and stop start tries
Who can say where the gilded lilly lies?

Our politics is yet another thing
I am too green springing eternal;
You are jade certain of the right road
So you know the lay of the land
But one wonders what clever tongues
Could find to do if it came to that
Your hand in mine held as a friend who knows
The windy way to where dark flowers grows

You must be at least
This quick for this ride
Your eyes see the lines
Up close to the lens
It could be good in any case
Upper or lower hard, soft palette
I could yet offer my lips to you
But for now our hands will do
