I hear your voice upon the phone
We talk as other people do
You hold no special charm for me
And I hold none for you

How eagerly I held my breath
Waiting for words that never came
How could I know that on your end
You also did the same?

We talked of pleasant friendly things
None of which I can recall
And neither spoke the simple words
Which meant the most of all

Then the mindless chatter dwindled
The silence grew and grew
Until the things we didn't say
Became no longer true.
