silent like the slow release of snow...
the forest hanging heavy with the drift
and the limbs freshly frocked and
wrapped warmly in their lambswool
the wooden arms swept low below
such a fine filigree of wet weight...
they step silver from the shadows
free to linger long enough to howl
at the swirling face of the full moon
and instinctively pierce the night.

smalleared widemuzzled sharpeyed
white black gray cream roancoated
ceaseless hunter of the wild beast
kin to coyote jackal dingo loyal dog
once free roamer of every forest
of the mountains plains and snow
misunderstood creature of this
wild north american landscape
legend of fright and sly treachery
and of evil werewolfian nightmares.

to be hunted trapped and poisoned...
your history a difficult one of being
tracked across this captured land
much like we treat all natives whom
we fail to understand or embrace
and so our freedom is lost as well...
sadly we have forgotten all about
the bond that ties us to each other
bold seekers of freedom one and all
we are the hunter and the hunted.

This is wonderful!

I especially like the second stanza, the way it sounds and plays with words. But I also love the message from the third stanza. Well done! Thank you.

los lobos

I always enjoy your work, and this is one of your best. Have you thought of writing an animal series?

wolf is my guide animal

it is agonizing to see them slaughtered the way that they are...the new high school near our home, their mascot is the timberwolf. I went for the first open house they had, and there was the skin of a timberwolf on display , as the school mascot. I was mortified, asked the, WHY? could you do this, I was told, it ws killed in Canada..I said, so that makes it okay?

Other parents upset as well, raised hell and now instead of being on diplay, he is poked in a closet somewhere, still dead, still a martyr for human ignorance...

excellent poem Steve sad but enlightening :rose:
