How did it come to this
A life full of cliches and cool detachment?
We will never be like that we said
Laughing gaily and with the confidence born of innocence.
How did we know that things would change
That love cools and withers from the familiar?
That others would seek to drive a wedge
or that we would believe them?
That was ahead and we were still in the sun,
The sun of our assurance and youth,
Where the future lay unlived and without fear.
