(This poem was written and read on 8 April.2002.
My first open mic attempt at a poetry evening. It was a great time.)

Riding along in the automobile of love
Your honey beside you at the wheel
Steering you both to your happy destiny
The vehicle is new, polished and damn fine
Love bug emblazoned on the side in candy red
Travelling in the lovers lane of the highway to heaven

Holding hands and exhanging loving glances
Silly squabbles over the map but directing together
Sharing the mintie moments through good or bad
Welcoming the small humps and bumps of the road
Knowing they only add to the comfort of your ride
Wear and tear starts to show a little but does not tarnish

Passing hitchhikers on the way, their destinations differ
Wave and pass them by, enjoying the ride on our own
The beautiful scenery and landscape always changing
Stopping to smell the roses and roll in the fresh grass a plus
Stretching legs and minds as the journey keeps us going
Allowing for a let down in air pressure or the addition of a spare tyre
Mostly it's smooth going but hill climbs can slow you down
Step on the gas, engage top gear, smile and laugh soon at the top

Frequent pitstops at pretty roadside rest stops to refresh
Some check ins at the Heartbreak Hotel to shelter
From bad weather, the journey still continues
The once new car may have a few scratches and dents
But it still cruises just the lovers lane the same: like a dream

Watching the love odemeter click and wind over
Clocking up the happy mileage, content to do so
Some of the gears graunch a little, a wheeze or two from the engine
The leather seats are a little cracked, but so comfy
The old car still travels well, it's all set to go long distance
Loving the open road for, taking it's loving owners on a road trip
Love for them is like a really long road trip, one they hope never ends.
