Lizzie, oh, what the hell can I do about you? How we fit
Well together; you inside my arms with my thoughts of your charms.
How the bar-flies now pale next my vision of you; very Baltic and blonde,
Blue eyes clear, narrow shoulders; your breasts perfectly unsuspended
'Cause you like them that way, how they bob just like fishing lures move
In my lurid mind's eye; hips and legs, curves and lines carved and etched
In my other mind! Perhaps there's something else but it escapes me now
(Though you know it all too well).
A couple of years ago, we
Didn't care much for each other. While I spent long hours studying hard
Where were you? At the bar making out in a car; when I drank
Diner coffee and crammed until 4 AM, you played records and danced
With your friends; when I worked for a summer to pay my way through,
You were outside sun-tanning in the nude. I had dated some girls,
A librarian or two, with thick glasses and armloads of books.
With a smile how they promised me more than mere looks, but at night
How they seldom delivered. The co-eds so pretty passed by,
My reserve did belie the young devilish lover inside.
Then you fell like a treasure from heaven right into my life.
You had everything I could have wanted; I had all the things
You could need. How my brains and your beauty so perfectly match
That the guys nudge my ribs and they whisper "What a catch!"

Then you told me about someone else, one who lurks in the dark,
Far away from the light of our love. He was there in your life
Before I came along, and he made a vague promise; you want
Only him, but you want to be wearing his Ring. When he shrinks
And he hedges and edges away from commitment, you reel
Him right back and he protests too much; in a minute you find
Yourself back in my arms; and we twist in the darkness and writhe
In the heat, and you cry "Yes! Yes! Yes!"

When the evening has turned into dawn, with your Levis pulled on
You edge close to the door; and the image of your sweet bare ass
Is embedded so deep on my sheets and my memory. You
Leave for me stale roaches, a mirror and straw, and the front
Room is always so littered, reminders I guess, and my noon
Cup of coffee always tastes like shit. How I want something more
Than just this! There are dreams we can wear, greater passions to share;
My eyes closed picture us as a pair.
Then I think about you
Loving him, what he says, how he shifts with the wind; and when he
Doesn't give what you want, how you come and you take it from me.
I am now loving one, who loves someone else,
Who loves her not. Well, maybe.
