Last night I changed my watch - for it would be
the start of summer time -from two to three.

But when this morning I'd got up to walk
the dog, and sleepy-eyed went out, the dawn
was white and snow fell on the frozen lawn.
I shivered; there was snow on every stalk
of last year's garden, like a picture drawn
in soft lead pencil, colour less like chalk.

Summer time - just call it what you may,
no words will make cold winter thaw away.
