Wish I was deaf
two voices in my mind
hanging on my ears
haranguing me day and night
unceasing in their bleating
beating me into numbness,
inaction, inertia

unable to decide, decipher
a code of conduct to pursue
to convince you to be
by my side, you are free
now, for the first time
your decision must be yours

I have no say, except I’m here,
hearing all sides
of the argument, unrelenting
ifs ands and buts, pelting me
like walnuts from a tree

in a windstorm, normally
I would take cover
but for you lover, welts
raised by trial make me smile
perhaps you will see my torment
understand in that moment
how much you mean to me
