How do I explain, my dear
That memories can be bittersweet
And full of longing

That the past is the past
And to relive those memories pains me
Because I must live in the present

How do I explain these things
When I can barely elucidate them to myself
And would you understand

That longing for something past
Can be as painful as a cut
But more damaging

How do I explain to you this
That I haven't forgotten
Even if I don't speak of it

That the memories are always there
And I think of them often, but alone
Because if we remember together

Then I miss you more.

Please understand.
